When is mosside carnival 2017

Carnival chairman Mickey Bisson said changes were being made as a result. In , the Arts Council stopped donating tens of thousands of pounds a year in direct funding for the carnival, citing "serious concerns regarding artistic quality", including that "photo evidence demonstrates persistent recycling of costumes".

During the same year, concerns over the carnival's accounts were raised internally by Aatif Rehman, an accountant who was asked to sign off the books. Mr Rehman told the BBC he refused to do so due to a lack of documentation, describing the organisation's book-keeping as "a cowboy job". Karen Cummings, the carnival's committee secretary in , said the organisation rarely produced or kept invoices, purchase orders or artist contracts.

Mr Bisson declined to respond to Mr Rehman's allegation and said he "disagreed" with Ms Cummings' account. Ms Cummings subsequently left the organisation and is now part of a rival group bidding to run this August's event. Several artists and contractors who have worked for the carnival in recent years have also alleged that they have not been paid.

Max Croasdale, who provided a sound system and DJs in , said every time he had seen Mr Bisson "he tries to fob me off".

Mr Bisson said responsibility for both payments lay with other contractors. Plan your trip. Travel to Manchester Hotels. United Kingdom Information. Book your flights. Places in Manchester Airports. Massey was later apprehended, arrested and sentenced to three months in prison for his crime. According to Michala Hulme, a member of the Manchester Centre for Public History and Heritage at Manchester Metropolitan University, Johnson and Harrison would actually rebury the coffin after removing the corpse in an attempt to cover up their heinous crime. And this tactic worked… Until they were ratted out to the police by a prying neighbour, who just so happened to witness them packing up cases throughout the night and believed them to be thieves.

The neighbour called the police and Constable Lavender brought down his beagles to search the office, eventually going on to make the grim discovery of several bodies that had been stuffed into cases, all ready for shipment to London. After being unable to identify the corpses as you can imagine, equipment and technology were severely lacking in those days , the constable took an advertisement out in the local newspaper stating that the bodies would be on public display the following day, and viewing would require a ticket — yes, in the s it was common practice to showcase unidentified corpses in an attempt to locate their families and next-of-kin.

Just imagine it. Anyway, after a fairly lengthy process, all the bodies were claimed and re-interred. Johnson and Harrison were later found guilty of stealing bodies and sentenced to fifteen months at Lancaster Castle — the same place the Pendle Witches were executed for alleged witchcraft.

If you think a walk down Market Street on a Saturday afternoon is the scariest thing Manchester has to offer, you are gravely mistaken…. There are many great ghost stories stemming from this historical cathedral but the most prominent rumour of all is undeniably that of Black Shuck. Black Shuck is the generic name for a demonic giant greyhound-type dog that would haunt villages back in the day and basically cause a whole load of havoc — and, apparently, there used to be one lurking in the shadows of Manchester Cathedral.

The beautiful Ordsall Hall is one of the oldest buildings in the whole of Greater Manchester and is known today for its rich history… but, sadly, it is also known for housing a number of ghosts and ghouls. Over the years, punters have reported ghost sightings, the sounds of groaning and wailing from upstairs, and even the feeling of a cold invisible hand pulling at their pockets and coats.

The Stretford Memorial Hospital permanently closed in , but a number of eerie spirits were allegedly left behind. Built back in as a private residence, the building was eventually lent to the British Red Cross as an auxiliary hospital during the First World War where, as you can only imagine, hundreds of people passed away within its walls. Following the war, Stretford Memorial was then converted into a maternity hospital.
