What is the difference between mesa and a mountain

The reason why they are differently named is because of size differences. Of the three similar geological landforms, Butte is the smallest while a plateau is the largest. It is because of the constant erosion of the surrounding land that a mesa is born with a flat top surface with steep slopes. Because of this action of water, many feel that a mesa is always found with river or stream flowing besides it.

Grand Mesa, with an estimated area of about square miles has been formed through constant erosion of the land by rivers Colorado in the north and river Gunnison in the south.

In between these two rivers lies an elevated top called mesa which is a huge flat top surfaced landform called Grand Mesa. Mesas are often found in dry places with few trees. When it does rain, it is a heavy downpour. The rain erodes the softer layers of rock and leaves the more durable rock to look like a tall landforms with steep sides and flat tops. Buttes are geologic features up to hundreds of feet high with steep sides, narrow pointed tops or very small flat tops. Buttes are what is left of what was once a mesa; the rest of it has been eroded away. The buttes and surrounding canyons contain a unique feature called The Wave, a multi-colored chute that has been cut into a sandstone mountain. A mesa started life as a flat plain. Rivers and streams have eroded away the surrounding area, leaving a flat-topped mountain. Typically, mesas have much larger tops that a butte, and many feel that a mesa can only be called that if standing water can sometimes be found.

The relief of the mesas ranges from nearly 2 km to m depending on the distance they are from the escarpment. Mesas are closely related to two landforms known as butte and plateaus. The basic difference between these landforms is size. The surface area of mesas ranges between The simple difference between mesa and butte is that some say mesa has more width than its height whereas others say a butte has more height than its width.

The three landforms mesa, butte, and plateaus are also related to the sense that over time, one landform can transform into another. For example, a plateau can be eroded into various forms. Similarly, a mesa can be eroded multiple times until its height is greater than its width, at this point it is considered a butte.
