In August , William N. Byers, along with three companions, used the primitive trail to reach the park. Byers was the editor and founder of the Rocky Mountain News and had an adventurous spirit.
During this trip, Byers met Joel Estes and one of his sons along the trail. Byers continued on to the cabins where he met Patsy Estes and the other children. The family had not seen anyone that year and welcomed the Byers party. The newspaper editor, no doubt, provided the Estes family with the latest news from the outside world.
It is one thing to be a summer tourist in Estes Park and enjoy the mountains, stay in the comfort of a nice lodge, and eat in a restaurant, but quite another to be at the mercy of the elements.
For the Estes family, the park was a constant struggle. During the severe winter of , the family decided to move back to the plains. In April , the Estes family made their way over Park Hill and down Muggins Gulch using the trail they had created.
They never returned and went on to live out their lives ranching in Huerfano County, Colorado.
